Simon talks rubbish – How Gem Cable Solutions are tackling environmental issues?

Environmental concerns are at the top of the agenda globally today – as well as at Gem Cable Solutions. Simon is our recycling champion – he joined Gem Cable Solutions as a Production Engineer in 2016 and since then he has been passionate about introducing recycling projects throughout the company. We’re very proud of the improvements that we’ve made as a result of Simon’s enthusiasm and the business’ general commitment to doing more where environmental issues are concerned.

How are Gem Cable Solutions making a difference?

Since joining us, Simon has been a big influence in terms of helping to ensure that Gem Cable Solutions keeps improving when it comes to recycling and environmental initiatives. These are just some of the projects that he has helped to introduce:

• Reusing pallets and cable reels. We no longer simply throw out pallets and cable reels but instead look for ways to reuse them, whether that is donating them to charities and schools or giving them to staff or local recycle projects. So far, we’ve seen these unwanted items reused for everything, from tables and chairs to art projects.
• Upgrading our recycling efforts. Now we recycle everything we can, including plastics, paper and cardboard, using our recycling partner. We have also taken steps to reduce the volume of printing that we do and where this is unavoidable to use recycled paper. Plus, all across the business, wherever possible, you’ll only see recycled toilet paper and recycled paper towels being used. We are also constantly looking for new ways to recycle our unused metal and cable off cuts.
• Reusing plastic bags. We know just how damaging plastic bags can be for the environment, so we’ve been collecting and donating them to be reused as materials for weaving mattresses for homeless people.
• Carbon Neutral Deliveries. Gem Cable Solutions is signed up to offset the environmental impact of our deliveries by opting for carbon neutral couriers.
• Gem Cable Solutions is part of the Plant a Tree from Your Desk campaign with Highfield Park Trust, so that for every new employee that joins us, we sponsor a tree within the Park.

Simon’s contribution to the way that Gem Cable Solutions tackles environmental issues has been huge. As you can see, the business now has a lot of initiatives underway. Simon has also been an effective ambassador for the business, meeting local charities, visiting local events and finding new recipients for products that we have identified can be recycled within the community. As Simon says: “It’s a great way to meet new people, make a positive contribution to your community and even learn new skills.”
